It can be a real challenge keeping balanced and on track when someone you love is going through a painful time and you become the caregiver. It is a challenge for both the person in need of care and the caregiver. Essential oils can be very helpful in a variety of ways.

This is what my husband Mark and I have been going through lately. I have had to step into the role of caregiver. It’s not the norm for us at all. Mark usually does 90% of the cooking and 50% of the cleaning. He loves to cook and just don’t. 😉 I run 90% of our home business, he runs most of the household duties. Well, things have changed a bit over the past year but dramatically in the past couple of months. Mark has 3 bulging disks pressing on the nerve in his spine. It is VERY painful. Lately it is so bad he has been bedridden most days. He can get up for a few minutes but can’t take sitting or standing for very long. He has an appointment with a neurosurgeon next week. Hopefully some help soon.

I thought I would share a bit of all of this with you because you may have need of this information now or sometime in the future. Lots of things can happen to put someone in need of care, even young people.

Take Care of YOURSELF While You’re Taking Care of Others

It is a blessing that I am able to be working from home with Young Living Essential Oils. It allows me to take care of Mark but also have all kinds of oils and supplements that are helping support both of us through this stressful time.

Some days I need a little Clarity oil to get focused on things I need to to. I am running back and forth from my office to our bedroom to check on Mark and care for his needs, plus cooking, cleaning and doing laundry. Shifting back into a business mindset after being in caregiver mode can be a challenge. I used Young Living Clarity oil to get my mind focused on writing this article today. I love Clarity oil blend on normal days but really thankful I have it during this time.

Stress Away is an essential oil blend that is wonderful during times when things are going on. I find myself getting hyper when I have things to do and the interruptions keep coming. Just put some Stress Away on your hands and inhale deeply.

Lately I find myself using a LOT of Young Living Joy essential oil blend. Things have really changed for us. It makes me kind of sad when I see Mark suffering. Well, that’s an understatement. He can’t do the things he loves to do. He also feels discouraged about that. Joy is an oil that can help emotional support for both the one cared for and caregiver.

Sacred Mountain is another oil I find myself drawn to lately. When I use it I feel strong like a tree. Sacred Mountain is a blend of Ylang Ylang and conifer oils that promotes feelings of strength, empowerment, grounding, and protection when diffused. I diffuse it but I also wear it like a perfume. I love the smell.

Valor or Valor II – Use on the bottom of your feet to feel more balanced and confident as you go through the process of helping your loved one through this difficult time.

Harmony – Use on each of the energy center points of your body. There are seven of them along the body: tail bone/root, naval, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and crown (top of head). Helps with balance.

Peace & Calming
– The name says it all. 😉

Sleep can be an issue when a person is caring for someone with a health issue. Sleeping next to Mark, I can hear the painful outcries in the night. It is really difficult to sleep knowing your loved one is suffering. The problem is, you need your sleep so you can have the energy to take care of them.

Lavender and Cedarwood are my favorites for relaxing before bed time. Other options are Roman Chamomile, Stress Away, Valerian, Tangerine, RutaVala and Peace & Calming.

When caring for someone, you sometimes can find that you have worked a little too hard and need a little soothing for those tired muscles.

Soothing Relief Recipe 2

5-6 drops Roman chamomile
4 drops peppermint

Rub oil blend neat on location. Mix with V-6 Mixing Oil or Base Recipe below.

Base Recipe:
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Beeswax, Shea Butter, or combination of the two:
SOFT: Use 2 Tbsp Beeswax per 1/2 CUP of oil mixture
FIRM: Use 4 Tbsp Beeswax per 1/2 CUP of oil mixture
EXTRA-FIRM: Use 6 Tbsp Beeswax per 1/2 CUP of oil mixture
HARD: Use 8 Tbsp Beeswax per 1/2 CUP of oil mixture

SOFT – This is a good one if you are wanting something closer to a lotion.
FIRM – A little more firmness.
X-TRA FIRM – this version would be a good choice for a foot or elbow balm.
HARD – Good for a lip balm or deodorant.

DIRECTIONS
Place coconut oil, extra-virgin olive oil and beeswax and shea butter in small glass jar. Place jar into pan and fill with approximately 2-inches of water. Heat over medium-heat, stirring mixture in jar until everything is melted. Remove pan from heat. Using a clean kitchen towel or wash cloth, carefully remove jar from pan and place on cutting board to cool. While cooling stir with knife to make sure contents stay well mixed.
Before adding your choice of essential oils, let the mixture cool a little but not too much. Letting the mixture cool helps to preserve and protect the delicate chemical constituents in the essential oils. You can speed the process by gently stirring with a clean knife. Add the essential oils while stirring and mixture is just starting to turn opaque and beginning to harden.

A nice bowl of soup on a cold day really hits the spot. Well, really any old day. I like cream of broccoli soup but I have been thinking lately about making a batch of Cream of Asparagus Soup. We often have steamed asparagus as a side dish and sometimes waste the tough ends. I always save the tough ends of broccoli and cauliflower for making vegetable puree for soups or whatever else sounds tasty. When pureed and mixed with the other vegetables, it gives you a nice batch of soup with extra for another meal. That’s what got me thinking about saving the tough ends to add to broccoli or cauliflower soup. Or, better yet, make Cream of Asparagus Soup.

This soup was a hit with my hubby so I will be making this one often.

You will need:

1 pound fresh asparagus
1 large onion, chopped
2 stalks celery with green tops
1 clove garlic
3 tablespoons butter
3 cups chicken broth
4 ounces cream cheese
2 drops Lemon Vitality Essential Oil, or to taste
2 drops Black Pepper Vitality Essential Oil, or to taste
salt
You could try other Vitality Essential Oil flavors like Lime, Thyme, Basil, Oregano.

Directions:

In a steamer, steam the asparagus until bright green and just tender. No more than 5 minutes. Cut the tips off asparagus.
About one inch long. Set those aside.

Cut the remaining asparagus stalks into 1 inch pieces. Cut celery in 1 inch pieces.

In another saucepan, celery, cook onion and garlic in 2 tablespoons butter over moderately low heat, stirring, until softened.
Add asparagus pieces and salt and pepper to taste, then cook, stirring, 5 minutes.

Add 3 cups broth and simmer, covered, until asparagus is very tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Puree in a blender until completely smooth. Return mixture to pan. Reheat soup while slowly stirring in cream cheese and butter.
Season to taste with salt and Vitality Essential Oils. Toss in asparagus tips and stir in.
Optional: Garnish with a few pieces of celery leaf.

Serve hot or chilled.

I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

I can hardly believe it is March already. The seasons seem to fly by so quickly. I guess it feels that way when we are getting old.

Another Spring will be here soon. Spring is a time for renewal and freshening up around the house and even our mental state. We have been indoors and running the furnace. That may be why the Spring season makes us want to open the windows and let the fresh air flow in while we do a little spring cleaning.

It is a good idea to diffuse during any season but especially in the winter season when the air becomes stale. Some Spring Diffuser Recipes will surely help freshen the air and also help get in the frame of mind for the coming Spring season.

Lemon oil is an amazing essential oil for cleaning and freshening up most anything. You can add several drops to your cleaning solutions to clean and purify your kitchen and bathroom. Lemon is tough on dirt but it also smells wonderful.

Add lemon oil to freshen and sanitize your dish sponge or cloth.
Use 1-2 drops lemon oil to remove gum, oil, grease spots or crayon.
A few drops of lemon will make your wood furniture glow.

One of the most overlooked natural cleaners available is vinegar. Vinegar is used by many for cleaning purposes, as it’s natural and doesn’t contain the harsh chemicals that many store-bought cleaners contain. Vinegar is effective with mold and is a natural antiseptic and fungicide. Just put it in a spray bottle and go. The smell with dissipate within a few hours. There are so many ways to use vinegar around the house. Here are just a few ways that vinegar will become a staple in your cleaning routine!

Mold and Mildew Spray
2 cups distilled white vinegar with 2 cups water
Pour vinegar into a spray bottle and spray on infected area. The smell will dissipate in a few hours (open a window to speed up the process).
Helpful Hint: For areas with persistent mold problems, use tea tree oil instead of vinegar, combining 2 drops of tea tree oil with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle.

Cleaning Moldy Windows
Add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to a gallon of water along with two caps full of Thieves Household Cleaner. Use a small towel to apply the liquid and a squeegee to clean it off. Floor-to-ceiling windows sparkle in minutes!

Bathroom Cleaning Tips
Vinegar works great on bathroom floors, fixtures, and faucets to remove hard water stains and buildup. Use a 50/50 blend on most hard water spots. For harder to remove stains use a 2:1 ratio of vinegar to water. For an additional cleaning boost, add 2 drops lemon or orange oil for every cup of water used.

Kitchen Cleaning Tips
Drains and garbage disposal, pour 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1/2 cup white vinegar and cover tightly with a plug or wet rag. Let mixture sit for five minutes, then flush with boiling water.

One day I had some chili lime flavored potato chips. They were really tasty but very carby. I need to keep the carbs low for a health issue I deal with. That can be a challenge because anything salty and crunchy is where I tend to go when I fall into an emotional eating mood.

As I was eating the chips and thinking about how I was really going to regret eating these chips, it occurred to me that these flavors would be really nice for a batch of almond crackers.

I always like to keep some almond flour crackers on hand. Some days you just feel like having a salty snack. Carbs, especially the ones with GMO grains give my body all kinds of fits. Einkorn flour doesn’t bother me at all. That’s why I often make recipes with half einkorn flour and half almond flour. This recipe has almond flour and flax seed meal.

All I can say is YUMMMM! These Chili Lime Vitality Crackers are the best crackers I have ever made. It now tops my old favorite: Fat Head Crackers.

Chili Lime Vitality Crackers

Chili Lime Vitality Crackers

1 1/2 Cup Almond flour
4 TBS Golden Flax Meal
1 Egg
1 Tsp Lime Juice
3 drops Lime Vitality Essential Oil
1 Tsp Chili Powder
1/2 Tsp Cumin
1/2 Tsp Sea Salt

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine almond flour, flax meal, egg, salt, chili powder, cumin, lime Juice and Lime Vitality Essential Oil to a large mixing bowl.
Mix until sticky dough forms.
Place dough on a sheet of Parchment Paper and put another sheet of parchment paper over the top of dough.
Use a rolling pin to spread dough out very thin, then peel off top paper. With a pizza cutter, score pressed dough gently into rows of 6 x 8 crackers.

Place parchment paper, with dough on it, on a baking sheet. Bake in 350 degree oven for 10 minutes. Check to see if the edges of the crackers are slightly brown. If not, bake a little longer. Keep an eye on them so they don’t brown too much. I take out crackers around the edges early if they are getting too brown. The ones around the edges brown much faster. Remove the pans and cool. Separate into crackers along the scored lines.
