memoryWe all have memory problems from time to time. You know what I mean. Like the times when you go to get something in the other room and then you are standing there scratching your head trying to remember what you were going to do. It has happened to all of us but it seems to be a little worse as we get older.

When we are school ages we are getting our brain stimulated all the time with learning and tests. Once graduation is over and you are out of school, the constant stimulation of the brain tends to be much lower.

When I was in junior high and high school I used to play a card game called Speed. They key was to get your cards played and go out before the other players. As a young parson I was really fast. In the past few years I have tried to play this game with some young people and was trounced. I no longer have the quick thinking ability I had in my childhood. We all get older and just as our bodies need exercise, so does our brain. You know the old saying, “Use it or lose it.”

Here are a few ideas for supporting a healthy brain:

1. Get plenty of sleep. That can be a challenge as we get older. If you are anything like me, and you have a hard time relaxing when it’s time to go to sleep, you might find Lavender Essential Oil helpful. Lavender is known for it’s calming, relaxing and balancing effects, both physically and emotionally

2. Never stop learning. Read, read, read. Reading is a way to exercise your brain. Start a new hobby or learn to speak a foreign language; do anything that causes the brain to think.

3. Strengthen your brain. Mental exercises are important for keeping the brain youthful. Simple mental exercises can include things like memorizing a poem, doing crossword puzzles, and playing word games like Scrabble. I play Word Chums with my husband and a couple friends. I have noticed that I am much better at it than I was when I started playing. In the beginning I had a lazy brain and didn’t feel like making the effort to find a higher scoring word. Now I am loving the challenge.

Games are a great way to have fun while stimulating your brain. I may be a 57 year old woman but I still love to have fun and play games. Mark and I enjoy racing with Mario Carts 8. Every now and then I like to add a little spiced rum to the mix. 😉

Daily mental challenges will keep your brain alert and young, especially when you try things that you have never done before.

4. Get moving. In addition to strengthening the heart, exercise has been shown to promote the production of brain cells. In a University of Illinois study, adults who walked for 45 minutes three times a week improved their ability to perform cognitive tasks by about 15 percent.

5. Increase your daily intake of antioxidants. Free radicals weaken cell walls, including those in the brain. Antioxidants protect cells by disarming free radicals. Young Living’s NingXia Red is a great way to support your healthy brain and body.

The secret to long, healthy life may be to eat lots of fresh berries. The reason why? The aging process is now largely understood to be the action of free oxygen radicals that arise in our bodies through normal metabolism and cell function as well as from external environmental sources.

Most free radicals contain electrically unbalanced oxygen atoms. Free radicals can be thought of as partial molecules frantically looking for their missing parts. This makes them hungry and aggressive, ready to grab a chunk from whatever tissue is available (namely a piece of our bodies). Hence, they can cause problems by disrupting normal function at a cellular level. As long as our bodies can keep these radicals in check by dissipating them harmlessly, we stay youthful and healthy.

When we suffer an immune deficiency or experience excess stress from environmental factors such as ambient radiation, impurities in our air or water and foods, etc., free radicals can be formed in our bodies at a rate faster than we can handle. These radicals aggressively attack our own tissues causing unhealthy mutations and irreversible damage. The consequences of this include accelerated aging, and a host of other problems.

There are foods and substances that absorb free radicals (containing antioxidants) and the more you partake of these, the more youthful and healthy you will remain.

* Scientists at Tufts University have developed a scale for the U.S. Department of Agriculture called the ORAC test.

* (ORAC-Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) The higher the ORAC, the higher the ORAC score, the more capable that particular food is of destroying free radicals, thus retarding the ageing process.

The top natural antioxidant foods as determined by Tufts University so far are as follows:

Compare these numbers with the berries and you can tell how potent essential oils really are. The last six oils on this chart are even more powerful than wolfberries.

Clove is the champion of all with an ORAC score over 10 million!! That means a drop of Clove contains 400 times more antioxidant per unit volume than wolfberries, the most powerful of all known fruits.
Of course, the comparison isn’t quite fair since oils are concentrates while fresh fruits are not, nevertheless, a 15 ml bottle of Clove Oil has the antioxidant capacity of 150 lbs of carrots, 40 quarts of blueberries or 16 gallons of beet juice.

TWO DROPS OF ESSENTIAL OIL OF CLOVE
Have the Antioxidant Power of . . .
2.5 tablespoons of NingXia Red Juice, 5 pounds of carrots, 2.5 quarts of carrot juice, 10 oranges, 20 ounces or orange juice, 2.5 pounds of beets, 1 pint of beet juice, 4 cups of raspberries, 2.5 cups of blueberries.

This means a drop of clove in your drinking water or a drop of any edible essential oil in anything you eat, is good support for a healthy immune system and you don’t have to eat a dozen oranges or drink a quart of beet juice every day to do it. A couple of spoonfuls of NingXia Red will do it, too.

The bottom is this: The benefits of breathing, applying and taking essentials oils internally while consuming NingXia Red and other supplements are far greater than you can imagine.
NingXia Red is a super-antioxidant berry juice containing juices from berries and essential oils rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene.

climbingSummer is almost over. YAY! My favorite time of year is coming. I love the autumn months. It is starting to cool down a bit and the humidity is much lower. This is the time of year when many people are out trying to get a few last minute fun in the sun before the winter weather is upon us. Enjoying the fall colors with a nice hike or a bike ride. Playing sports with friends. This is also a good time for yard work and house repairs. Lots of autumn activities that could result in tired, overworked muscles.

We have these issues during all seasons. Winter months may have snow shoveling and winter sports like skiing, sledding, etc.

Improper or excessive use and tension of muscles can lead to symptoms of overworked muscles hours later. When muscles undergo excessive tension for a length of time, muscle fatigue, stiffness, and aches may be experienced.

Young Living has several products that are helpful in supporting tired achy muscles. Some of these are included in the monthly promo for September.

Making a Salve or Cream
SOFT – This is a good one if you are wanting something closer to a lotion.
FIRM – A little more firmness.
X-TRA FIRM – this version would be a good choice for a foot or elbow balm.
HARD – Good for a lip balm or deodorant.

INGREDIENTS
1/2 Cup of Oil Mixture- a combination of…
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Beeswax, Shea Butter, or combination of the two:
SOFT: Use 2 Tbsp per 1/2 CUP of oil mixture
FIRM: Use 4 Tbsp per 1/2 CUP of oil mixture
EXTRA-FIRM: Use 6 Tbsp per 1/2 CUP of oil mixture
HARD: Use 8 Tbsp per 1/2 CUP of oil mixture

DIRECTIONS
Place coconut oil, extra-virgin olive oil and beeswax and shea butter in small glass jar. Place jar into pan and fill with approximately 2-inches of water. Heat over medium-heat, stirring mixture in jar until everything is melted. Remove pan from heat.

Using a clean kitchen towel or wash cloth, carefully remove jar from pan and place on cutting board to cool. While cooling stir with knife
to make sure contents stay well mixed.

Before adding your choice of essential oils, let the mixture cool a little but not too much. Letting the mixture cool helps to preserve and
protect the delicate chemical constituents in the essential oils. You can speed the process by gently stirring with a clean knife. Add the
essential oils while stirring and mixture is just starting to turn opaque and beginning to harden.

How to Make Hot and Cold Compresses

Preparing for a hot compress:
Fill a bowl with very hot water.
Add 4 to 5 drops of essential oil.
Dip a folded piece of sterile cotton cloth into the prepared water. Squeeze out excess water. Place the moistened cloth onto the affected area until it reaches body temperature. Repeat steps 3 through 5 two to three times.

Preparing for a cold compress, replace hot water with ice cold water and follow with steps 2 through 6.
