Every year about this time people start feeling like doing a little spring cleaning. Do you find yourself feeling motivated to freshen things up a bit after a long winter with the house closed up and the furnace or a wood burner running? There is something motivating about the spring. It makes you feel like getting out and doing things. I find myself wanting to give the house a good cleaning.

Most of the cleaning products on the market these days are full of toxic chemicals that are not at all good for your health. I’m sure you are like me, you do NOT want to be poisoning your family every day with the products you are using to clean your home. Health and safety data only exists for 15 percent of all the chemicals out there, even though so many are known to cause asthma or endocrine disruptions.

Essential oils are a better way. They are totally free of harsh chemicals, steam distilled or cold pressed from pure plants. Young Living’s Thieves Product Line is plant based and free of dangerous harsh chemicals.

Young Living Thieves Products

Here are a few DIY recipes using Thieves Products for natural cleaning in your home.

Glass and Mirror Cleaner

1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner
5 drops Citrus Fresh essential oil (or any citrus oils)
1 teaspoon white vinegar
3 cups water

Add all ingredients to a spray bottle and shake well to combine. To use, spray windows and glass surfaces liberally and wipe clean with a lint-free cloth.

Deep Cleaning Scrub

1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner
2–3 tablespoons baking soda
3 drops Young Living Lemon Essential oil
Combine Thieves Household Cleaner and enough baking soda to form a thick paste. Apply mixture with a clean cloth, sponge, or scrubbing brush and scour the surface thoroughly.

Deep Cleaning Scrub – Larger batch

Ingredients:
3 cups Baking Soda
3/4 cup Thieves Household Cleaner
1 Tbsp Distilled Vinegar
30 drops Young Living Lemon Essential oil

Directions:
1. In a large glass bowl, add your Thieves Household cleaner, vinegar and Lemon essential oil.
2. Then slowly add your baking soda, stirring to combine.
3. Once completely mixed through, transfer to your desired container. I recycled my old honey jar. It fit perfectly. You could even use an old soap dish bottle. (However you may need to add a bit of water to thin it enough to squirt through the top)
4. Use wherever a little more scrubbing action is needed.
Once completely mixed through, transfer to your desired container. You may need to add a bit of water to thin it if you are using a squirt bottle like an old dish soap bottle.

Have you used essential oils in the laundry?

Ditch the harsh chemical dryer sheets and switch them for something natural and chemical free! Wool dryer balls dry and soften your clothes faster, without using chemically loaded dryer sheets or fabric softener.

Did you know that dryer sheets are loaded with harsh chemicals? Sure they make your clothes smell nice but that scent is actually synthetic and could contain up to 200 different chemicals. Dryer sheets have been linked to asthma, allergies and even respiratory issues and skin problems. Not to mention, the ingredients found in chemical softeners and dryer sheets are not environmentally friendly and can be quite harmful.

Dryer Balls with Essential Oils
You will LOVE the way wool dryer balls will fluff your clothes and you can use them to infuse your laundry with essential oils!

To help with static, use white vinegar and 2 metal safety pins.

Using white vinegar in the dryer is great trick for eliminating static. You can simply spray a clean washcloth, sock, pre-cut piece of cloth, or dryer balls with vinegar and a few drops of Tea Tree, Lavender, Lemon, Bergamot, or other essential oils. This item is then tossed into the dryer with everything else.

You can also pour about 1/4 c. of white vinegar into the fabric softener dispenser on your washing machine. You can’t smell the vinegar.

Another trick to help cut down on static is to pin two safety pins on two different items in the dryer. I have seen people attach the safety pins to 2 of the wool dryer balls.

One of the most overlooked natural cleaners available is vinegar. Vinegar is used by many for cleaning purposes, as it’s natural and doesn’t contain the harsh chemicals that many store-bought cleaners contain. Vinegar is effective with mold and is a natural antiseptic and fungicide. Just put it in a spray bottle and go. The smell with dissipate within a few hours. There are so many ways to use vinegar around the house. Here are just a few ways that vinegar will become a staple in your cleaning routine!

Mold and Mildew Spray
2 cups distilled white vinegar with 2 cups water
Pour vinegar into a spray bottle and spray on infected area. The smell will dissipate in a few hours (open a window to speed up the process).
Helpful Hint: For areas with persistent mold problems, use tea tree oil instead of vinegar, combining 2 drops of tea tree oil with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle.

Cleaning Moldy Windows
Add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to a gallon of water along with two caps full of Thieves Household Cleaner. Use a small towel to apply the liquid and a squeegee to clean it off. Floor-to-ceiling windows sparkle in minutes!

Bathroom Cleaning Tips
Vinegar works great on bathroom floors, fixtures, and faucets to remove hard water stains and buildup. Use a 50/50 blend on most hard water spots. For harder to remove stains use a 2:1 ratio of vinegar to water. For an additional cleaning boost, add 2 drops lemon or orange oil for every cup of water used.

Kitchen Cleaning Tips
Drains and garbage disposal, pour 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1/2 cup white vinegar and cover tightly with a plug or wet rag. Let mixture sit for five minutes, then flush with boiling water.
